5 For Friday: The Best FIRE Links of the Week (12/08/17)

The 5 Best FIRE Links

What’s The Worst That Can Happen?

Jason, Mr. Free at 33 himself, gets philosophical on us this week. I found this post to be highly impactful and important, which is why I’m putting it right at the top of this week’s 5FF.

This post hits on the fear that keeps most of us in check. How dare we dream of something better? How dare we think we can succeed? Thumb your nose at fear and get rid of the shakles that hold you back! Seneca observed that “we suffer more in our imaginations than in life” and this post riffs on the same idea.

The Triad of Hustling

In this post, J. Money aka J$ shows us how to prioritize our hustle. It’s very easy to get bogged down with side hustles and this helpful guide helps you to prioritize and shut down any unnecessary “$hit”. I’ll be applying these principles myself to make sure I stay on target, and I recommend them for you too!

How to Give Money (and Get Happiness) More Easily

Mr. Money Mustache, the macdaddy of personal finance bloggers, writes an earnest post about giving. Even if you’re not in a position to give yet, it’s great to read this so that you can begin to think about charitable giving and let it percolate in the back of your mind and you meet your FIRE goals. Anecdotally, I can attest that people who give generously (not just money but time) tend to be much happier overall.

Half-Assed Cord Cutting

Mr. AE brings up an interesting concept here. Instead of “whole-assing” a frugal concept, it’s perfectly acceptable to half-ass it. You don’t have to be severe and austere like some grumpy Spartan. Embracing the Suck is not something you have to apply to EVERY facet of your life! Apply it where it has the most impact. Mr. AE goes over this concept and lets you know that it’s ok to half-cheek every now and then.

A 10 Day Retirement

Fritz at Retirement Manifesto conducted his own mini-retirement recently. This concept is essential, I believe. Once you have a solid idea of how retirement is going to look, give it a test run! You’d be surprised what you end up discarding and what you end up keeping in your plan. We spend years in school preparing for our working life, we at least owe it to ourselves to spend a few days preparing for our retired life!

That’s All, Folks

That’s all I’ve got for you this week. Go forth and conquer the weekend as a slightly wiser version of yourself!

Which post(s) resonated with you most this week? Is there a post that you loved that you think I should check out? Let me know!
